How Are Natural Insect Repellents Different From Chemical-Based Ones?

Bothered by nasty pests ruining your days out with your family? Trying to enjoy a simple picnic, but the mosquitoes and midges just won’t stop biting and distracting you from spending time with the people you love? You probably use some form of repellent to keep stinging, bites, and the creepy-crawlies away, but did you know that there are natural insect repellents and chemical-based ones?

Whilst browsing your average grocery mart or pharmacy, you may have noticed that some insect repellents are labeled as “natural insect repellents”. However, what exactly are natural insect repellents and how are they different from the other options available?

What Are Natural Insect Repellents Made from?

There are a few differences between natural insect repellents and chemical-based ones, but these differences are rooted primarily in the ingredients used to make them. Natural insect repellents are made from (you guessed it) natural ingredients such as plant-based products or essential oils such as peppermint, lemongrass, geranium, and soybean.

On the other hand, non-natural insect repellents use man-made chemicals. These synthetic ingredients come in many different forms, but the most popular used is known as DEET. DEET stands for diethyltoluamide and appears as a pale-yellow oil.

Whilst DEETs are generally safe, they can be problematic if applied under the clothing or onto broken skin. This is because DEET can sometimes be an irritant and can cause stinging eyes or breathing difficulties. DEETs can also be tricky to remove, and sometimes a rigorous shower may be needed to remove all traces of DEET-based insect repellents applied to the body.

Benefits of Natural Insect Repellents

On the other hand, natural insect repellents tend to not have these problems unless you are allergic to the plant-based products used as ingredients. Unlike DEET-based insect repellents, natural insect repellents also have a less pervasive smell and are less distracting. They also tend to feel less oily and are less likely to stain clothing. They are also less likely to have a harmful effect on the environment, which is all-important if you’re doing things like water-based activities. DEET-based insect repellents have been found to have some toxic effects on fresh-water organisms.
